The Importance of starting right

Updated: Aug 19

There are some people in the world that say just moving is the best way to get things done. I agree with this in terms of doing things for personal growth, fitness, or establishing a new connection. Absolutely just start! But when it comes to business and trying to do something new, starting right becomes more important.

Throughout my life I have consistently been pretty risk averse, needing to take stock, really think before taking an action. Take moving to the UK, this is years in the making, and I arrived, completely unprepared, but benefiting from the privilege that comes from having a little bit of capital behind me, because I did the planning, and executing better in other aspects of my life.

This move to the UK really did come from one person’s story, about seizing life, taking the opportunity and pushing themselves outside of their comfort zone. While spending time with them, seeing the spark, the fire for life and reflecting on my own life... Well... I can be risk averse but I'm not completely ignorant to when a good thing is too good to pass by.

So, I started the ball rolling, and it rolled and rolled and rolled until I rolled of the plan in Heathrow. I have no clear path, permanent location, any concept really of how far a mile is. I have reached my destination (broadly speaking… I’m on at least the right side of the globe) without a plan, but it is costing dollars while I bumble my way across the northwest of the UK and up to Scotland, trying to find the right place to start.

When I reflect on business, this approach isn't really viable, unless you are just doing business for fun and happy to take the time and money to feel out new ways of working. However, those lucky few are not like the most of us, we need to have a plan, that we can execute, with tactical steps, and a very clear idea of where we are starting from.

‘The line in the sand’ is often used to indicate the point of no return, you have made a commitment, and once crossed you have to keep going. I’ve taken the time to develop a process and approach to help you understand how your business is performing three in metrics necessary for change in using data and systems to improve your business.

  • Appetite for change

  • Information Management Strategy

  • Information driven decision making

Understanding these concepts will help you and your team set clear boundaries, prepare for change, use information wisely, and execute initiatives that effectively support your business. Allowing you to Start Right.

In life just starting can be the best thing in the world to make changes to how you live, your life circumstance, or force you to seize the opportunity in front of you. But in business, you have a responsibility to take time to start right, because often, when you cross that line in the sand, there aren’t many options to go back.
